[N.B. Depending on your house, some of the buttons and various coloured parts of the site will be in different colours, so if your screen doesn't look exactly like those shown in the pictures colour-wise, don't worry!]
The layout of the new site is very different to that of the previous site - and for those of you that were around for the site before that, it’s a lot more similar to that one, with the navigation panel along the top, and your own personal settings (profile, logout, etc) in the top right hand corner.
This is the main page that you will see after logging into your account. This is the Homepage of HiH so to speak, and it is here that you’ll be able to get to most pages around the site.
Note: if you are using HiH on mobile, the dashboard will look slightly different, but largely the same - you can access the “navigation bar” options by clicking the three lines in the top left corner of your screen, you will need to swipe to view all of the dash cards and some of the extra features down the side (quotes, news stories etc.) will appear at the bottom.
The Navigation Bar is where you’ll find most of the links to other pages within the site. Along it, you have the options “HiH”, “Hogwarts”, “Groups & Roleplays”, “Courses”, “Library”, “Forums”, and "News".
Several of these have drop down options, for example; “HiH” contains the options Dashboard,which takes you to the main feed; Who’s Online?; Code of Conduct, which takes you to a page detailing the rules of the site [Make sure you do read this!]; FAQs and Support HiH, which takes you to a page explaining how you can contribute financially to the site.
“Hogwarts” contains the links to News Feed, Dormitories, Great Hall Chat, House Points and Leaderboards, all of which will be discussed later (for details about Dorms click here, and for details about the Great Hall/House points/Leaderboards click here. The Library tab contains lots of links to different things you can do in the library - again, all of these shall be discussed in further detail later on, when we discuss the library here.
Personal settings can be found by clicking on your own name/profile picture in the top right hand corner of your page. Here you can look at your own profile (“View Profile”), see the people you are friends with (“My Friends”), edit your profile (“Edit Profile”), edit your account settings (“Settings”) or logout of your account (“Log out”).
The lightning bolt symbol in the top left hand corner of your screen shows your notifications. When you have a new notification, a small circle in your house colour will appear over it, showing the number of new notifications that you have. Click on the symbol and you’ll be shown all of your new notifications (or, if you have no new notifications, your newest ten or so). You can scroll through them with the bar on the right hand side, and at the bottom you’ll find a button reading “View All Notifications”.
The magnifying glass next to the notifications button represents the search icon - click on it and a search bar will appear just below the navigation bar. There you can search for users or keywords in courses, forums and library posts.
The Feed is, of course, where you can post messages for everyone sitewide to read, comment on and like and where you can do the same on others’ posts. You can change which feed you are reading by clicking the button which reads “Change Feed”; you can display feeds showing posts from everyone (“Wizarding World”), people you’re following, people in your house, and staff.
When you first sign up, your default feed setting is “Wizarding World”, but if you’d rather your default settings showed a different feed, click “Change Default Feed” at the bottom of the drop down list.
Dash cards show important or new information, with links to relevant pages.
