Lesson 3: The Five Exceptions

Chapter 3
~Introduction

-5 Principal Exceptions to Gamp's Law: Food, magical energy, love, life, and knowledge

~Food

-Cannot be conjured or transformed into existence
-Can be summoned/duplicated
-Would be dangerous even if it could be conjured because conjured items go away after awhile
-Can transform things into food-like items(ex: desk to pig) but making food out of a pig would give you only the nutritional value of the desk

~Magical Energy

-Matter, energy, and our magical power cannot be created or destroyed
-We can draw energy in from around us to use spells but can't create magical energy when it wasn't there originally
-We can't conjure any plants, creatures, or materials with natural magical abilities either
-Can't imbue Muggles or Squibs with magical power
-Can conjure charmed/magical objects as charms fade and weren't originally there

~Love

-Abstract emotion
-Can't be falsely created(Ex: Amortentia just creates a strong attraction, but not actual love)
-Voldemort couldn't feel love because he was conceived while his mother was under the effects of a love potion

~Life

-Can't be created in any form
-When something has died, its soul cannot be conjured back
-Conjured plants aren't truly alive; they just look alive(a conjured flower bouquet won't require food or water)
-Conjured/transformed animals also don't have life. They only mimic qualities of animals that are alive

~Knowledge

-Knowledge is the information/memories stored in your brain
-A book is a means to acquire knowledge but does not constitute it
-You can't create knowledge you don't have(Ex: You can't conjure into your mind the entirety of the Spanish language)
-Could conjure a book which gives you knowledge(Ex: A Spanish book) as long as you know the book exists and are familiar with its contents before conjuring
-Knowledge can be stored and shared(Ex: Pensieve, which stores memories that can be viewed and remembered by others)

~Assignments

-Mandatory quiz on Gamp's Law
