The Sorting

Chapter 4

Brooke sighed. The train had come to a stop. Her nightmares are finally coming to life. Harry could see her anxiety showing through her emotions. "Brooke. You are going to be an amazing witch. Whatever house you are put in. Don't forget to come visit me sometimes," Harry said with a smile. Brooke smiled at him. "Follow us," Hermione said to her. Brooke followed Hermione to the carriages. Everyone else from the compartment followed along. All of them finally had space to all sit down, with a few spots left. The Weasley Twins were in Theo's year, so they already went ahead of them to the castle. After a sudden realization, Brooke turned towards Ginny, sitting right next to her. "If Fred and George are in seventh year, how could they have sat with us?" Brooke asked her. "Well, all you have to do is check in down at the seventh year compartments. But Fred and George have always had a knack for breaking the rules," Ginny answered with a wink. Brooke smiled at her. Something about her, just made Brooke love Ginny's personality. Right before the carriage took off, a boy came running, with a large plant, which looked just like a cactus. "Hey Neville!" Harry called to him. "Hey guys," He said. "What plant is that?" Ginny asked. "Mimbulus mimbletonia," Neville answered, taking a seat. "Interesting," Brooke said. "Who are you?" Neville said curiously. "This is our new edition to Dumbledore's Army," Harry said, as if they had some sort inside joke. The group chuckled. "You'll get it later," Ginny whispered to her. They chatted and laughed the entire way up to the castle, but eventually, the carriage stopped at the castle. Brooke got off the carriage last, and followed the group to the castle. Brooke caught a glimpse of Draco and Theo as she walked, but they didn't see her. Brooke snuck into a bathroom as they walked toward the Great Hall, and she changed into her robes she was to be sorted in. Brooke exited the bathroom, and ran behind an entrie group of first years. When the sorting begun, Professor McGonagall requested she stay behind to be sorted last. She said something about an announcement. Brooke heard everyone being sorted, and it honestly made her grow scared. McGonagall was doing the sorting, so Brooke sat there by herself. She heard a noise coming from her right, and immediantly backed down the staircase, hoping not to be seen. "Brooke?" A voice whispered. The voice wasn't too quiet, as it echoed throughout the corridor. "Theo?" Brooke asked, walking towards the voice. Brooke saw Theo turning the corner. "What are you doing?" Brooke asked him in a low voice. "I'm not going to let you sit out here for an hour by yourself," Theo answered. "Did you want to sit in silence?" Theo asked her. "I thought it'd be nice. Not like i'd get much time to myself once I start at this place," Brooke said. "Not true. I've been here for seven years, and I still haven't found any time to be with friends. Just me, myself, and I," Theo answered. "Well, that will change, since I probably will be bugging you and Draco all year," Brooke said. "Probably will be the best year yet," Theo said. Brooke smiled. They talked for awhile, until Theo looked down at his watch, and decided to sneak back into the Great Hall to watch her be sorted. Brooke waited by herself for ten minutes, and then McGonagall opened the doors of the Great Hall, and guided Brooke to a chair that sat in the middle of a podium, in front of long table, which sat a bunch of adults; professors no doubt. Brooke scanned the room for a sign of her brother. No sign of him. Brooke sat down on the chair, and looked around the room. Everyone was whispering, things mostly about her age, some about her apperance. "She's way too old to be a first year," "She looks like a fifth year!" "How is this possible?". Brooke shut her eyes, and took a deep breath. McGonagall placed the Sorting Hat ontop of her long brown hair. The Sorting Hat moaned. "I thought we finished for the year," It muttered. Brooke took a long deep breath. "Hmm. Older than the others, are you? Never sorted a fifth year before," The hat mumbled. Brooke looked around, and found her brother staring at her, with full interest. "There's a bunch of bravery here. Ah, surrounded by ambition. But there's a kind heart, filled with intelligence, but where to put you?" The hat said loudly. It was dead silence. "I have no idea," The hat said quietly. "This cannot be happening. Oh dear!" The hat said, with a voice of pain. "I believe we have our first ever, ever, hat stall," The hat said. The Hall was echoing in silence. Brooke looked around in pure shock. She heard McGonagall muttering to the Headmaster. McGonagall took the Hat off her head. Brooke spun around. "Come with me," The Headmaster said. Brooke groaned. She followed Dumbledore to a back door, and down they went into a staircase. What was a hat stall? And why was it happening to her?
