Fern Griffins

1st Year Student

I’m Fern, a first-year from the enchanted forests of Scandinavia. I love plants, Bowtruckles, rainy days, and the quiet magic hidden in all living things.

Backstory

My name is Fern Griffins....

I grew up tucked away in the forests of Scandinavia, where the trees are ancient and the air hums with magic. My family has lived there for generations, quietly tending to the enchanted wilds that most wizards only read about. Our home is hidden beneath layers of ivy and old protective charms—if you didn’t know where to look, you’d walk right past it.

Some of my earliest memories are of talking to plants that whispered back and chasing the glimmer of Nifflers through the moss. I’ve always had a soft spot for magical creatures—especially the smaller ones like Bowtruckles. They seem shy at first, but if you’re patient and kind, they’ll trust you enough to show you their secrets.

I spent most of my childhood reading by the window while the rain tapped against the glass, the forest outside wrapped in fog. My favorite books were herbology guides and old tales about witches who could command the seasons or heal with the touch of a leaf. I used to imagine that if I studied hard enough, I might one day do the same.

When my Hogwarts letter arrived, it didn’t come by owl like everyone else’s. A silver magpie landed on my windowsill instead, carrying a note tied with birch bark. My parents looked at one another in that silent way adults do when they know more than they’re saying. I still wonder if there was something special about that letter—or if someone at Hogwarts already knew me before I arrived.

Now that I’m here, I spend as much time as I can in the greenhouses or wandering near the edge of the Forbidden Forest. There’s so much life everywhere—plants, creatures, whispers of magic waiting to be discovered. My wand, made of rowan wood with a unicorn hair core, always seems to glow a little warmer when I’m surrounded by living things.

I may be quiet, but I like to think I notice the small things—the way leaves turn toward the light, the hum beneath the earth, and the secrets that the wind carries through the castle’s old stone halls. Hogwarts already feels a bit like home… though something tells me my real adventures here are only just beginning.
