No words can describe the feeling I felt when I first stepped into Diagon Alley, with the shops towering over me. They were filled, finally, with the proof that magic was real. It was real, the one topic I'd been avoiding all my life.
I was bullied a lot in school, for things I couldn't control: the bully's plate of cafeteria food smashing over his head, for example, or a particularly nasty teacher suddenly finding themselves floating out the classroom window. Somehow, I was always involved.
I would look down at my hands and not know what I, even, was capable of; I began to avoid large crowds for fear of hurting someone.
The night my Hogwarts letter came, I was torn between being ecstatic and doubtful. Maybe this was just someone from school, playing a hurtful joke. I refused to go to school the next week, as there was no way they'd get satisfaction of any kind.
But the minute I stepped into Diagon Alley, I knew three things. It was all real, I wasn't crazy or dangerous, and my life was about to take a huge turn.
