My Journey to England

Chapter 1

 Murder Mystery

Really , I wish I could have a friend. Someone I can trust, someone whom I know will therefore also trust me. I am now on my way to England, to a town which I heard is called Leeds though I am not entirely sure that what I’ve heard is correct. So I am travelling around the ship hoping to find someone that definitely knows where we are heading.

Oh, yes. Right, mother said to not say ‘oh’ as it is very informal. As I was saying, a maid who seems to work on this ship has now told me that yes, we are indeed going to Leeds. Speaking truthfully, I dislike saying the word going which is why I corrected the maid and told her that the word going is informal. I suppose the maid did not see eye to eye with me as she sent me to sit down and not talk to someone like that again. Though I seem to know something different, mother told me that if you don't like how someone is talking then you should retaliate. I really am just doing what mother said. You see, I am French and we are already very polite to each other. My mother says that English people are too formal but if I want to fit in with them I must do what they do. However, during my journey, the English didn't seem to be very polite. Please be honest with me, am I using the word seem too much? Right, if you don’t answer me then I guess I have to answer myself and I say no, I am not using the word seem to much. Because of me being disrespectful, the maid has sent the chefs to give me less food today. I must say that I disagree with that so I insist that the maid has not spoken in a delightful manner to me thus she should have the same consequence as me.

Alas, I did speak with the chefs and the same maid but unfortunately I don’t think that they can tolerate my thoughts. They are also saying that as I come from France I should be respectful to all kinds of people. Well I never, people can really talk these days, can't they?

Ok, only 30 minutes until we arrive in England, finally. I went to my room and 5 minutes later a servant said that I have a letter. This is what it said.

Dear Jade

I have now learnt how to write in english, I must say it is very fascinating. I hope you are well and please tell me if anyone in your school is bullying you. I have ordered someone from the school to take you in. Unfortunately, the school is for boys and girls but I have sent a letter to the school trying to make them separate the girls and boys. Your father is working hard for money, and we will send you around ten pounds in about a week. Me and your father love you dearly and we miss you as much too.

Warmest regards,

Mother

By the way my name is Jade, how nice it is to meet madam/sir. Please excuse me, I simply can’t know your name when I am on a ship and you are in a rocking chair in your living room. You must be wondering how I can speak English and which school I am going to. It is a school called The Grammar School in Leeds, and my mother forced me to learn English whereas my father did not bother doing anything. As you read in the letter, my mother and maybe my father are trying to tell the school to separate boys and girls. I’ve got to write a letter back to my mother, don’t I.
